No that's not a self portrait although some people claim that there is a
passing resemblence. It's just me showing off with what I can do. But then
anybody can do that.
So just what is a "good" web site? In an attempt to try and find out I've surfed around and looked at a few.
Most have a visitor counter. I've done that. They also have a means of
e-mailing the author and I've done that. Some even have a guest book for
people to sign and I've done that too. Lastly I've even got this site to
play you some music as some pages opens.
Web sites need to be bright, informative, interesting and easy to navigate.
I've tried to be bright enough without being gaudy and it is easy to
navigate. If you, the visitor, has been informed and interested then it is
informative and interesting. If you haven't, then it isn't.
The "experts" of the computing world may consider that the quality of the
sound isn't all that good. I can't help that because the PC world favours
.wav files. I can sample at up to 44 KHz in mono but my sampling software
can only save as .8svx or raw IFF. So I have to convert .8svx to .wav and
that presents a problem because the only software that I have which will do
the trick is Sound Studio and in order to play the .8svx converted to .wav
file at the right speed I have to sample at 8.363 KHz. C'est la vie.
They play back fine on AWeb but I don't get a peep out of Voyager. I
strongly suspect that it is my configuration of Voyager that is the trouble
but as yet I can't spot what is amiss.
My thanks must go to a guy called Joe Barta who produced the Professional
Web Design HTML Authoring Tutorials which have been invaluable to me. The
tutorials were in fact produced for users of Windows 95 and Netscape but
HTML is HTML in any OS so I was able to follow things without too many
problems. In fact I can say that Joe's tutorial taught me everything that
I know about HTML. O.K. so I can't remember most of it, but I know where to
look for input. I also "borrowed" the tutorial's animated picture of a
dragon.
The one thing that I couldn't find in Joe's tutorials is how to play a
sound on my web site. I found that information on OctaMED's web site. But I
can't give you a link to it as the partial site that I have is courtesy of a
cover CD and you can't link to that. Go on try to Yahoo it for OctaMED.
