A dealer is selected in the time honoured way and the cards
are shuffled, cut and dealt to each player in turn, plus an
extra hand. This extra hand, known as dummy, is positioned
between the dealer and the player on his right. Somewhere
during the deal, but not the first or last card and entirely
at the dealer's discretion, a card is dealt FACE DOWN in the
centre of the table.
NO ONE MAY LOOK AT THIS CARD UNTIL AFTER
THE HAND HAS BEEN PLAYED OUT.
This game is usually played for cash or tokens (chips) and
doesn't really lend itself to playing for "love." After the
deal, each player places two tokens on top of the card which
was dealt face down in the centre of the table (Queenie's
Kitty) and one token alongside. (Chipping Kitty)
After studying his hand, the dealer may opt to change his hand
for the dummy hand. The dummy may not be scrutinised before
the change takes place. A player cannot change back once he
has picked up the dummy hand.
If the dealer does not want the dummy, then the option passes
to the next player on his left. If that player does not want
the dummy, the option passes to the next player on his left
and so on. Once each player has rejected the option of
exchanging his hand for the dummy, no player may change their
minds.
If anyone, except the dealer, exchanges his hand with the
dummy, they pay for the privilege, by placing one token into
the Queenie's Kitty. It is dealer's privilege to get the dummy
hand free. The exchanged hand is placed FACE DOWN on the table
and to one side. Once the dummy has been exchanged it is DEAD
and no one else may swop hands with the dummy.
NO ONE MAY LOOK AT THE DEAD HAND OR UNUSED DUMMY HAND
Play commences by the player to the dealer's left placing his
lowest BLACK card onto the table in front of him, at the same
time calling out it's suit and value.
Whosoever has the card which is of the same suit and one
higher value, can lay down that card face up in front of them,
at the same time calling out it's suit and value. Play
continues thus, until no one can play the right card.
Whoever played a card last then leads with the lowest RED card
from his hand and play again continues as far as possible.
Play continues, alternating red/black until someone has used
up all their cards. (Has Chipped) That player then takes the
Chipping Kitty and whoever PLAYED the queen of the same suit
as the centre card, takes the Queenie's Kitty.
On very rare occasions it is possible that no one can "chip."
In this case the Chipping Kitty is held over until the next
game. A much more frequent occurrence is that the appropriate
queen was not played and therefore the Queenie's Kitty was not
claimed. This too, is then held over until the next game.
During the course of play it can happen that a player is
obliged to lead a card of a colour which he does not have. In
this case the lead passes to the next person on his left and
if he cannot lead, then the person on his left is offered the
lead, and so on. If no one can lead with the appropriate
coloured card, the game stops and no one wins the Chipping
Kitty.
In Find The Lady, the Ace is counted as a low card. i.e. One.
